SHUT HASTINGS PICK

‘‘The Press” Special Service HASTINGS. The track will be firm and fast for the Napier Park races at Hastings today and will suit Shut and Royal Pursuit, which are selected to win the double. Shut, whose best form recently has been highly promising and includes useful races in the Wainui and Watkins Handicaps at Trentham and a bold fifth there in the Harcourt Stakes, is engaged in the President’s Handicap. Bandon, which finished third in the Ansett Handicap at Hawera at his last start and has worked well since, also appeals strongly tor the first leg because he is bound to be improved. Dhuran, whose form at Trentham indicated he was improving rapidly, has now had three outings since spelling, and should be close to his best. Apart from these three, Vigour, Watchet, Fremont, Justify and Dark Song have fair prospects. John Derry has been troubled by soreness and is a doqbtful runner. With the scratching of Dalvul the issue in the City Handicap, six furlongs, the second leg of the double, appears clearly defined, with Royal Pursuit the likely winner. Royal Pursuit resumed racing In the Solway Handicap at Masterton and finished fifth. Sherlocks and Sir Guy have raced well enough lately to take part in the finish, but the others do not greatly appeal.
