Jockey Impressed By Speed Of Star Belle

“We could do with a few more like her around here,” D. N. Hadfield told the Takanini trainer, I. J. Tucker, as he dismounted from Star Belle yesterday. The Riccarton jockey was much impressed by the smooth action and speed of the brilliant Auckland-owned filly.

By Riccarton standards Te Mania is considered a fairly smart mare. But she could not stay with Star Belle, a strong Stewards’ Handicap fancy, over the last two furlongs of six on the plough.

Te aMnia (F. H. Skelton) and Star Belle ran their first two furlongs in 26sec and still ran as one after three in 38 4-ssec. But Star Belle pulled away early in the run home and ended the gallop still on the bit and with a lead of 10 lengths. Her time was Imin 16 3-ssec.

Of the New Zealand Cup horses worked at speed over ground, 33 feet out on the course proper, none made better time than Manana. With A. J. Stokes, his race rider up, he ran the last nine of 10 furlongs in Imin 59 4-5 sec. He ran the last halfmile in 51 2-ssec and the final three furlongs in 38 2-5 sec with his stablemate, Court (B. D. Collins). Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) and Sabell (D. Tucker) were paired in a similar gallop. These cup rivals took 2min 0 4-ssec for the last nine furlongs of 10, the last half-mile in 52 4-ssec and the final three furlongs in 40sec. Royal Bid led by half a length at the finish. The New Zealand Derby candidate Agrippa (E. G. Low) was partnered by Hawkins (C. Kerkvliet) in a 10furlong trial. They ran the last nine together in 2min 3 4-ssec and the final halfmile in 53 2-ssec. Fast Mile The New Zealand Cup rivals, Red Crest (A. H. Eastwood) and Brown Brocade (E. A. Gye), ran a fast mile together on the plough. They

took Imin 42 4-ssec, the last seven furlongs in Imin 28 2-ssec and the final three in 38sec.

The derby rivals, Fair Account (D. Tucker) and Master Sheeny (G. W. Mein), were responsible for another good mile on the same track. They took Imin 45 4-ssec, the last seven furlongs in Imin 30 l-ssec, the last half in 50 3-5 sec and the final three brilliantly in 36 4-ssec. They were abreast at the finish. Golden Vanity (G. W. Mein) and Not Guilty (D. N. Hadfield) worked evenly over a mile on the course proper. They took Imin 49 2-ssec, the final half-mile in 54 4-ssec. Golden Vanity led by a neck at the end. Next Please (E. G. Low) beat Blind Date (R. B. Taggart) by a neck at the end of their mile. The distance was run in Imin 47 3-ssec. the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec and the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec.

Talic (F. H. Skelton) and Prince Pat (C. T. Wilson), two derby rivals, took Imin 45 2-ssec for their mile and ran from the half in 53 2-ssec. Best Seven General Gilbert (L. Carston) and Early Dawn (J. Kerkvliet) were together throughout seven furlongs in Imin 30 2-ssec, the final halfmile in 52 2-ssec. These stablemates will be rivals in the Riccarton Handicap. Last Count (E. G. Low) led Gunga Din (D. Gullery) by half a length after seven furlongs in Imin 30 4-ssec, the final half-mile in 50 2-ssec.

Summer Magic (E. Lowry) was let off with an easy seven furlongs. He took 1 min 33 2-ssec. and ran from the halfmile in 53 2-ssec. This New Zealand Cup candidate shows no ill effects from his campaign at Trentham. Together (A. J. Stokes) and Sir Limond (N. T. Cowles) ran from the seven in Imin.

32 l-ssecs. and came home from the half-mile in 51 4-ssecs. They were abreast all the way.

Submerge (L. Clark) led Pee Wee (A. E. Gye) by three lengths after seven furlongs in Imin. 32 3-ssec, the final half-mile in 52 4-ssecs. Hushaway (B. D. Collins) and Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) were paired for six furlongs in Imin. 20 2-ssecs. They accelerated in the run home, running the last half-mile together in 50 3-ssecs. Marconi (A. H. Eastwood) was half a length in front of Gun (L. Legros) after six furlongs in Imin. 20 3-ssecs, the final half-mile in 52 3-ssecs. Deceptive Shipmate was his usual deceptive self. He ran half a mile in 49 4-ssecs and seemed to do so easily. He was ridden by A. J. Stokes, his Stewards’ Handicap rider. Prince Callan (K. W. Quayle) was shading Ibn (A. R. Swanson) after running the last four furlongs of six in 53 3-ssecs. The Hagley Handicap topweight, Major Luca, completed his work by sprinting three furlongs in 38 3-ssecs. He was ridden by his Foxton owner-trainer, Miss D. C. Schimanski. Beforehand he had been trotted and cantered for almost an hour.

Rag Doll (N. T. Cowles) and Red Bank (G. W. Mein) ran the last four of five furlongs together in 51 3-ssecs. Tumble (A. H. Eastwood) showed that he was fully recovered from a recent leg injury by sprinting the last four of six furlongs in 50 3-ssecs.

Burns Knight (A. J. Stokes) and Fair Gap (Miss F. Kerr) sped home from the half-mile together in 49 4-5 secs, the final three furlongs in 37 1-5 secs.

Caprino (C. Kerkvliet) ran the last four of five furlongs in 52 2-ssecs.
