Handling Of News
Sir, —Varian J. Wilson does seem to be indulging in a quibble, since the very issue of “The Press” of which he complains carries a commendably full and frank account of Australian activity in Vietnam which hardly casts a good light on our conduct there. I refer to the arrest of “all males between 12 and 45 and females between 12 and 35” in a “village” about the size of, my home town (Greymouth) after getting impatient with the results of trying to be friendly with the people near their base camp. Is it in accord with Christian ideals to try for a while to overcome dislike with friendliness, and
then become impatient, arrest everybody, and cart them away in “trucks . . . for questioning?” I would like to see democracy established in South Vietnam, but nothing more clearly illustrates the inadequacy of those who are directing Western efforts than this news item. —Yours MARK D. SADLER. November 1, 1966.
