Malaysia
Sir, —Th© Malaysian Government arrested hundreds of members of opposition parties before Mr Johnson’s arrival in Kuala Lumpur to prevent demonstrations. That was bad enough for a Government which pretends to be democratic, but now this Government has shown the world that it is capable of even greater evils. A demonstrator was shot dead by police in Kuala Lumpur during Mr Johnson’s visit there, when a crowd of 300 refused to disperse. Similar demonstrations took place in Sydney, when Mr Johnson was there, and I suppose there the demonstrators numbered more than 300, but Sydney police did not find it necessary to open fire. The Malaysian Government seems to be saying this to Mr Johnson: “Look, President, we want to please you so much that we are even willing to kill a few of our second-class citizens just to make it easier for you to travel in our streets.” — Yours, etc., T.J.
