Crackers A Hazard
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 20. Firemen faced exploding fireworks and had to cut their way through barred windows to reach a spectacular fire which swept through the top floor of McKenzie’s department store in Broadway, Newmarket, tonight Damage to stock, which had been increased for Christmas sales, is estimated to be between £lO,OOO and £20,000. The first floor of the twostorey building was gutted and stock on the ground floor was extensively damaged by smoke and water. At the height of the blaze a column of thick black smoke towered several hundred feet above Broadway and flames from the fiercely burning upper floor leapt 40ft high.
