SPARKS RD. TAVERN
Application
Refused
An application by Inns of Canterbury, Ltd., for permission to establish a tavern on six acres of land in Sparks road was refused by the Halswell County Council at a special meeting on October 13, it was reported to the council’s monthly meeting last evening. However, the council decided to advise the company that it accepted the decision of the Licensing Control Commission that a tavern was needed in the Hoon Hay area, and would discuss with the Christchurch City Council and the Housing Division of the Ministry of Works the possibility of finding a suitable site in the vicinity that was zoned for urban purposes.
The report said that the application was refused because the proposed tavern would detract from amenities likely to be provided or preserved under the council's undisclosed district scheme. The land was zoned rural A, in which a tavern was not a permitted use, and was also land of high actual and potential value for food production, and should be preserved against the encroachment of urban development, the council had decided.
Youth Fined. Keith Graham McCormick, aged 17 a seaman, was fined £3 for drunkenness when he appeared before Mr L. J. Shuker, J.P., j n the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday. He pleaded guilty.
