TALLEST CHIMNEY

(N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, September 19. Although there are six pours still to go before its completion, the Marsden power station chimney is now

the tallest in New Zealand, outstripping the one at the Marsden oil refinery.

The present height of the power station chimney is 355 ft and on completion it will be 400 ft, surmounted by a 3ft 7in stainless steel hood.

The sixth pour was to have been done today but the weather was unfavourable, Each pour raises the chimney about 7ft 6in, and there are 43ft 6in still to go to complete the concreting. The first pour for the chimney was made on May 6 and it is expected the concrete work on it will be completed in a fortnight.

A team of 10 men has been employed on the job.

In the chimney there are 1256 cubic yards of concrete, but the concrete acts merely as a shell for a steel liner of 14ft in diameter through which the fumes pass. The height of the chimney and forced draft will propel the exhaust fumes high into the atmosphere to eliminate the possibility of nuisance.

An American, Mr P. Johnson, of the Custodis Company, of Chicago, is supervising construction. He also supervised the construction of the oil refinery chimney.
