SKI-ING POSTPONED Swimming In Hot Pools Instead

(By Our Ski-ing Reporter) The Mount Ruapehu jinx on New Zealand ski-ing championships continues. The national downhill races had to be postponed because of the appalling weather conditions.

In 1964 the nationals at Ruapehu had to be abandoned and this year there is little prospect that the weather will clear before Wednesday. Visibility is poor and snow is falling steadily on the course. Most of the racers spent the day swimming in the hot pools at Tokaanu, 30 miles away.

While it might have been possible to hold a slalom, the downhill course with a vertical drop of 2000 feet would almost certainly have caused a fatality. The fast bottom

section includes a series of bumps and requires a degree of control not possible in the conditions. After four weeks of almost continual fine weather, it is most disappointing that the weather should have broken. It seems that the jinx is still active.
