NEW COACH HAS FIRST GAME
Western’s new coach, A. Marshall, played his first game in New Zealand yesterday, less than 24 hours after arriving in Christchurch. He came on as substitute for J. Brock after 15 minutes of the match against Christchurch City in the Supporters’ Club tournament.
He was on the winning side—City scored the only goal—but Marshall immediately began his task of welding Western into a cohesive unit.
His task was complicated by Western losing a second player in the first half, T. Haydon, who aggravated his injured knee, and for the rest of the game Western played with 10 men. Western had as much of the play in the second half and was desperately unlucky not to score, C. Martin sending a fine header against the bar.
Marshall, after a short period in attack, moved back into defence in the second half, and did some excellent work in mid-field, twice opening the City defence with penetrative passes.
City got the one goal that mattered early in the game when R. Taylor snapped up half a chance. Off balance and from a difficult angle, he got his foot to a ball crossing the goalmouth.
City's play looked promising until the ball reached the wings, where neither R. Bruce nor R. McLean managed to make headway. Both needed far more time to control and move the ball than Western's defenders were prepared to give them. This victory gave City an excellent chance to carry off its third title of the season, level on points with Western but with a game in hand. Western’s English Cup tie against Waterside on Saturday was a double header, counting also towards the Supporters’ Club tournament. In the only other match nlayed yesterday. Shamrock beat H. 5.0.8., 5-1, in the Supporters’ tournament.
Brighton's Success New Brighton won the C. E. Keys Cup (the competition be-
tween the top three clubs from each of the second division and first division reserves) when it beat Shirley-Nomads, 30, on Saturday. The final positions were:
