C.0.R.S.0. Helpers To Sort Clothes
At the Addington Show Grounds today, about 1500 voluntary helpers will begin sorting clothing collected on Saturday for the annual C.0.R.5.0. clothing drive held in Christchurch, Ashburton, Rakaia, Leeston, Akaroa, Lyttelton, Kaiapoi and Rangiora. It is expected that it will take about three weeks to sort all the clothes.
In Christchurch, the clothes were collected by more than 1700 pupils from 65 primary and intermediate schools,
under the direction of the principals of the schools. The clothes were taken to the Addington Show Grounds in trucks lent by the Army, Air Force, local bodies, and private carriers, and driven by members of local youth organisations. About 20 boys from the Rochester Hall helped to unload the clothes. The district organiser for C.0.R.5.0. (Mr G. H. Coley) said yesterday that although at this stage it would be impossible to estimate the amount of clothing received, the appeal appeared to have been “quite successful.” Last year 500 bales were collected with about 500 garments in each bale. “We are most grateful for the support of the contributors, the teams of collectors, and all other helpers," said Mr Coley. “From what I have seen of the clothing collected, it is of a very high quality.” Sacks of clothing would continue to arrive for a number of days, he said. Depots would be set up in the city arei where the clothes could be left. In Leeston the appeal will continue for a month. This year the clothes would be sent to South Korea, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, Algeria, Greece, and other areas.
