New Hotel In Tonga
(N Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) NUKU ALOFA (Tonga), September 18. Tonga’s new International Dateline Hotel was officially opened by King Taufa’Ahau Tupuo IV on Friday. More than two hundred people attended the ceremony. They included the Governor of Fiji (Sir Derek Jakeway) and the Governor of American Samoa (Mr Rex Lee). During his opening speech, the King also officially named Tonga’s new tortoise. The tortoise, sent by the National Geographical Society to replace the one which died recently, was named Tuimalila 11. The first tortoise, believed to be 200 years old, used to roam the Royal Palace grounds. Guests were entertained at a cocktail party and buffet by local bands and dancers who performed Tongan, Tahitian, Hawiian and Maori items. The hotel, of modern design and decor, is aimed mainly at Tonga’s tourist trade. It will provide sight-seeing services and fishing trips as well as accommodation.
