“ADDING TO COSTS”
Freight Rise Criticised (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept, 11. Manufacturers were bitterly disappointed at the increase in shipping freight rates from Britain and the Continent, said the president of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation (Mr J. R. Maddren). Mr Maddren said the federation felt the same way about the increase now announced between North American ports and New Zealand.
“Every one of these announcements adds further to the production costs in New Zealand,” he said. “In addition, the freight charges are biting deeper and deeper into our limited earnings of overseas funds, and so restrict our ability to buy from overseas.”
