Regal Ruler Surprises

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND.

Regal Ruler, which has mixed flat racing with hurdling lately, sprang a major surprise when he took the Coronation Handicap, the main event and first leg of the T.A.B, double at Avondale yesterday.

Regal Ruler made the pace to the hometurn. He looked beaten when Corbassiere dashed past him at the furlong, but A. G. Colven sat quietly on him until less than 100 yards from the finish. He thpn rallied his mount, which surged past Corbassiere again in the last few strides and won by a neck. The hardy Taranaki gelding Master Defence, which failed on firm footing last week, revelled in the heavy ground to win the Shorts Handicap, the second leg of the TA.B. double. The Regal Ruler-Master Defence combination paid £314 6s for £l. The weather was bleak and showery and the going heavy. i On-course the totalisator handled £139,089, including £31,140 10s on doubles, compared with £151,733 5s last year, when the meeting was held on a Saturday.
