Balleta Runs Well
“The Press" Special Service
WANGANUI. The Rotorua mare, Balleta, the sprinter, Dunraven, and the first leg candidate, Chatty Lady, were the most impressive trialists at Wanganui yesterday preparing for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow. The trials were held against the rail on the No. 1 grass. The track was in good order. Unless there is rain it will be quite firm tomorrow. Dunraven (Cleaver) ran easily over five furlongs, coming from the half-mile in 52sec, the last three taking 39 l-ssec. Balleta (Tooman) finished strongly at the end of a halfmile in 54 2-ssec, the last three requiring 39 2-ssec. The Rotorua mare is particularly fit and could be one of the hardest to beat in the Durie Hack Handicap. Advocacy (Cogan) did not strike out freely in his threefurlong sprint at the end of two rounds. He recorded 40 3-ssec for the final section. He is being troubled by a tender foreleg. On his exhibition yesterday he cannot be considered a serious contender for Newman Handicap honours. If there is rain Chatty Lady must be given an excellent chance in tomorrow’s first leg. Ridden by R. T. Cleaver yesterday, she worked easily alongside Khoranet (Waaka) and Big Boy (Carvalho) over six furlongs in Imin 19 l-ssec, the last three in 41 l-ssec. They set a fast pace in the opening stages.
