TUNNEL WALLS
New Wash Method The tunnel was now very dirty and hosin’ down was of little use, the maintenance superintendent (Mr L. E. Olliver) reported to the Christchurch-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. A tray had been made and fitted to a tractor to carrytwo drums of mixed detergent. It would be possible to clean up to 1500 feet of tunnel wall with the brush and detergent without replenishing the drums. Good progress was being made towards a satisfactory design for the tunnel cleaning machine, Mr Olliver said. All the equipment required to build the machine would be available within the next three months, and it was expected that subject to the authority’s approval of the drawings, construction would begin early in the New Year.
