“Don’t Do It Yourself”
Even tunnel control officers of the Christ-church-Lyttelton Road Tunnel Authority have to face the embarrassments of some private motorists and be attended by fellow officers for punctures. One even ran out of petrol. “This does impress on officers the need for swift, efficient coverage and clearance and make them really appreciate the service they give patrons.” Mr W. A. Wheldale. the tunnel superintendent, told the authority yesterday. The police had been among those serviced and made mobile recently, he said. In a warning “don’t do it yourself,” Mr Wheldale said that a truck driver
decided to make his own renairs to an over-heated vehicle before the patrol vehicle arrived. He was burnt severely about the face and chest. “Any servicing to vehicles on modern highways is an extremely hazardous occupation for the unwary,” Mr Wheldale continued. “It should be left until the vehicle is either covered by a patrol vehicle or removed to a safe place. “Persons without effective coverage changing tyres on American highways have a life expectancy of 20 minutes,” he said when advising drivers reporting breakdowns to return to the front of or inside their vehicles after asking for outside help.
