Prices In U.S.A.

Sir, —Recently 1 returned from a two-month holiday in America, and it was interesting, therefore, to read Mr Pollard’s comments. In case fellow New Zealanders get wrong impressions, breakfasts cost 25s only in high-class hotels. I travelled from coast to coast, and nowhere did a breakfast exceed 10s or 12s for eggs, bacon, ample coffee, toast, and water. Even in Hawaii, similar meals were 99 cents (about 8s). Normal tips are 10 to 15 per cent of the bill. Cafes and drug stores give nourishing foods for even less, and no tips required. I agree that America is expensive compared with New Zealand, but a little care and forethought can give reasonable costs without unnecessarily high meal prices, which our allowance cannot afford. Hotel accommodation was excellent everywhere at an average of 9 dollars a day which included television, shower, etc.; these were med-ium-class hotels.—Yours, etc,. N.Z. GLOBETROTTER.
