Gallipoli Medal

Sir, —There has been some discussion this year of the possibility of issuing a commemorative medal or medallion for the Gallipoli campaign. Apparently, neither the Australian nor the New Zealand military seem aware of the Gallipoli ribbon which was issued in 1916 and then

withdrawn. Some New Zealand soldiers returned to New Zealand wearing the ribbon. A medal was never struck. I do not know the reason for cancelling the issue of the ribbon, but I have a piece in my possession, brought back by a relative who was on Gallipoli, and in my opinion, this ribbon should be resurrected and used if an issue is to be made. After all, the Waterloo Medal was not issued until after 1850. This piece of Gallipoli ribbon was lent to Whitcombe and Tombs for inclusion on the dust cover of a book which they published recently. I wonder whether many of the Gallipoli veterans remember - the ribbon and whether the Main Body Association has considered advising the Government on the matter.—Yours, etc. J. K. COLLINS.
