Russian Pay Scales
Sir, —Your article, headed “Moscow Living Standards,” in’ today’s paper, quotes Dr. Gregson as saying that a university professor earns eight times the salary of a taxidriver. This statement has shattered my faith in Communism, because I thought it was a way of life where there were no underdogs and all shared alike. Is there not some catch-phrase about working to the extent of one’s capacity and being paid according need? Are the needs 'of taxi-drivers an eighth of those of university professors? Maybe the highlypaid workers subscribe to a common fund to subsidise the wages of the unskilled workers. If not, I now understand why the Communists in New Zealand do not emigrate to the countries supposedly carrying out their Utopian philosophies.—Yours, etc., SWINGING VOTER. August 19, 1966.
