Labour-Only Contracts

Sir, —I am indebted to “A. B. Cedarian” for pointing out that the contractors do not only make profit from the consumer and bricklayer, but also from those of the very impressive list he mentioned. In 150 words I could not write an essay on profit; what 1 did point out was that labour-only produces increased profit for the contractors at the expense of the consumer and bricklayer. Profit is surplus capital over and above all other expenses, including the contractor’s expenses. As a qualified bricklayer from England I have “given away” bricklaying in Christchurch because of such poor working conditions on building sites. Lab-our-only will lower these conditions to some of the worst in the world.—Yours, etc., P. G. SUTTON. August 20, 1966.
