Borstal For Theft Of Jewellery

DARGAVILLE, August 18.
Two youths who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court today to breaking and entering a Dargaville jeweller’s shop with intent to commit a crime were both convicted and sentenced to two years’ borstal training.
They are Stephen Donald Leitch, aged 17, a workman, of Dargaville, and John Charles Thompson, aged 17, a sheetmetal worker, also of Dargaville. Detective Sergeant L. F. O’Shea said that on the night of August 6-7 the windows of a jeweller’s shop in Dargaville were smashed and £536 3s worth of jewellery stolen and £l2 12s 6d worth of stock damaged. He said that at first both youths denied the offence but later admitted it. It was also admitted that a sawn-off loaded shotgun had been used to smash a window of the shop. The other window was smashed with a beer bottle All but £l5l 6s 6d worth of the jewellery had been recovered.
Mr N M. Izard, S.M., told Leitch and Thompson that when released from borstal training they would each make their share of the resti-
tution. The amount asked for was £213 17s.
