DRY IRON TESTS
Unreliable Settings From tests carried out in its new laboratory in Christchurch, the Consumer Council finds that no completely satisfactory dry iron is available in New Zealand, according to “Consumer News.” Six brands of dry irons were tested, and, the report states, what a woman expects an iron to do and what actually happens in performance can be quite different. The survey showed “too much haphazardness” in thermostat settings for various fabrics, with marked differences of temperature even among irons of the same brand, and, the report states, one should not place too much reliance on the settings. To test strength, the irons were dropped 1000 times on to a steel plate. Only one iron failed the test, various bolts and screws having come adrift. Four irons failed in a test to show if the cord was adequately secured. The sole plate of one iron melted away when left on for 200 hours at maximum temperature. On another, bakelite split and distorted and on a third, rubber insulation burnt away.
