“The Press” In 1866

July 30 MAUNGATAPU MURDERS—Photographs of the four prisoners are to be seen in several of the shop windows in this town. With reference to them, the “Nelson Examiner” says, “The prisoners were in no way averse to have their likenesses taken, and Burgess and Kelly expressed a desire to have a few copies, when printed off, for presentation to their friends. The photographs were taken by the acting gaoler, Mr Clouston, assisted by Mr Brown, photographer, of Trafalgar street, and the likenesses are admitted by all who have seen them to be excellent." MASONIC.—It is stated by the ‘Timaru Herald” that the foundations of the Masonic Hall are now above the

surface, and ready for the walls. The building' will be much set off by a handsomely dressed plinth, portions of which have been finished, and are on the ground ready for setting in. MESSRS COBB AND CO.—lt is stated by the “Hokitika Chronicle” of the 24th instant, “That the first trip of Cobb and Co’s line of coaches to the Totara was performed yesterday, and a regular arrival and despatch of coaches has been arranged. We are informed that the coach for the first time was well laden, and the line ought, in all reason, to be well patronised, as the traffic between Ross and Hokitika is considerable, and the convenience of regular means of communication can hardly be over rated.”
