Killed In Collision
A man was killed instantly when a car and a station waggon were involved in a collision on the Main North road, one mile and a half south of Cheviot, about 6.35 p.m. on Saturday. He was
BERNARD WILLIAM MARTIN, aged 45, a farmer of Hurunui Mouth road, Domett. He wa s married, with three daughters.
The seat of Mr Martin’s vehicle was thrown forward by the impact and he was pinned behind the steering wheel. Some difficulty was experienced in removing the body. . Both vehicles were wrecked. The station waggon was driven by Robert Henry Hansen, of Waikawa Bay, Picton. He suffered head injuries and shock. He was taken by the Cheviot St. John ambulance to the Christchurch Hospital and admitted.
Traffic was very heavy because of persons returning home after the Rugby match at Lancaster Park.
Boy Killed Two deaths in road acci-j dents in South Taranaki dur-; ing the week-end brought the district’s road toll for the last four weeks to eight, the Press Association reported. A nine-year-old boy was fatally injured when two cyclists were involved in an accident with a car on Glover road, Hawera, at 1.40 p.m. on Saturday. He was Kevin John Christiansen, son of Mr and Mrs A. Christiansen, Turuturu road, Hawera. He was dead on arrival at Hawera Hospital. The second cyclist, Roy Harding, son of Mr and Mrs B. Harding, of Turuturu road, was admitted to Hawera Hospital suffering a broken leg. The car was driven by John Rex Anderson, aged 17, of New Plymouth.
Flung From Car A man was killed instantly when he was flung from a car which struck a power pole on the Hawera-Opunake highway about three-quarters of a mile south of Pihama about 6.40 p.m.' on Saturday. He was James Anthony Reid, aged 38, of Miranda street, Auckland. Mr Reid, married, with a family, was a passenger in a car driven by Bruce Kirk, a farmer, of Te Kirj, South Taranaki. After the car struck the pole it rolled back on the road and was struck by a car driven by Newton Charles Collins, also of Te Kiri. Car Hit Pole
A 73-year-old woman was killed at East Taieri at 7.45 p.m. on Friday when a car in which she was a passenger hit a pole. She was Mrs Elizabeth McLeod, of 15 Earn street, Invercargill. The driver of the car, Alexander Elliott Matheson, aged 54, of Invercargill, was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, but after an operation was reported to be in a satisfactory condition. Mary Bernadette Therese Lynch, aged 18, of Invercargill, was admitted to hospital. Her condition is satisfactory. Left The Road A young married man was killed when the truck in which he was a passenger left the Te Anau-Lumsden highway and rolled over about 8.15 on Saturday night. He was 'Allan Sydney Woodford, aged 24, a meat hunter, of < Lumsden. The truck was driven by Edward William Phipps, of Mossburn, who escaped with minor injuries.
