Saturday Morning Bowls To Continue
The controversial three fours Saturday morning bowls competition will be continued this season.
The annual meeting of the Christchurch Bowling Centre last evening turned down a remit from the Beckenham club, seeking the discontinuation of the competition and, in its stead, suggesting a four fours competition on Saturday afternoons.
The remit was beaten heavily on a show of hands, only 10 voting in favour of it Mr G. Cotton, who suggested the change on behalf of I Beckenham, said that only
28 clubs had entered teams in the competition. Clubs were not entering teams because many had great difficulty in completing club championships, said Mr Cotton. The answer would be to play club titles on Saturday mornings. Mr Cotton made five points in favour of the change more clubs would be induced to take part; the change would create more keenness and interest; it would assist the centre match committee; it would assist the centre selectors; and it would improve the standard of bowls.
Mr M. A. Le Cren explained how the change would affect clubs. It would pose few problems for the centre match committee, he said. Warning on Finance
The treasurer (Mr J. Owen) gave a warning on the centre's finances.
“We cannot be dipping into our reserves year after year,” he said, referring to the year's deficit of £125. “More touring teams are coming every year and we will have to look into a levy to pay these expenses,” he said. The centre’s levies on bowlers remained unchanged from last season—2s 6d to town members and Is to country members, both reducible by 3d fit paid by December 1.
