CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF
The City Council last evening withdrew its objection to an application by C. R. Hawkins, Ltd., to replace its premises on the comer of Montreal and Conference streets, provided conditions for minimising noise, smoke and fumes were met. Sunday Films.—The council declined an application from the two major cinema companies to be allowed to show “restricted” films on Sunday evenings. The council’s practice is to allow “A” films and “Y” films on Sundays. Salary Increases.—lncreases in the new salary scale for the Public Service from August 1, 1965, were applied to officers of the council employed on an annual salary basis. Plant Donations. Gifts from Dr. A. E. Flint of nine alpine plants and from Mrs C. E. Foweraker of more than 100 rock and alpine plants for the proposed alpine house in the Botanic Gardens were acknowledged by the parks and recreation committee. The committee's report said that many of the plants were rare or uncommon.
Waltham Pool.—Considerable difficulty was being experienced in obtaining a suitable delivery date for the tiles on the pool surround at the Waltham Park lido
pool, and an alternative might have to be considered, the parks and recreation committee reported. Study Tour.—The overseas study tour of the traffic engineer (Mr H. S. Surtees) and the traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) was extended from two months and a half to about three months to allow them to attend conferences in the United States and Europe as well as visit cities not on the original itinerary where it was considered valuable experience and information could be obtained.
Casting Practice. The Christchurch Fishing and Casting Club was given permission to build a projection on the south bank of Victoria Lake from which it would be possible to hold fly-casting practice and tournaments. Park Administration.—The Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) was authorised to attend the annual conference of the Australian Institute of Park Administration in Sydney from August 28 to September 2, and to invite the institute to hold a conference in Christchurch if this was possible. Parking Meters.—The placing of parking meters on both sides of St. Asaph street between Colombo street and Manchester street was approved on the recommendation of the traffic committee.
