Scrappy Games In Women’s Basketball
Play in the eighth round of the Canterbury senior women’s basketball competition showed a lack of vitality on Saturday. Most teams did not extend themselves fully and this resulted in generally uninteresting games. Results: — West A 20, St. Nicholas 20 Technical 37, Teachers’ College 28. New Brighton 51, West B 4. WEST A V. ST. NICHOLAS The game opened well, with some good work on the part of both teams. However, as play progressed, the standard deteriorated. West had a more successful combination and produced more competent passing, and at half-time, led 16-10. In spite of faulty passing, West maintained its lead mainly because of some extremely good
shooting by L. Dawson and L. King from all parts of the circle. St. Nicholas was also having trouble with its passing and this was accentuated by not very efficient combinational play. TECHNICAL V. TEACHERS' COLLEGE Technical was obviously the masters In this match, but Teachers’ College, seemingly undaunted by the stronger team played with spirit and brought the score from 8-0 to 8-8. L. Almond, at centre, played extremely well, although her passing was occasionally misdirected. After half-tlme.when it led 21-13, Technical seemed to lose some enthusiasm while Teachers’ College continued to play a forceful game. Technical used many long-lobbed passes which were sometimes effective but often easily intercepted. Goal shooters on both sides were efficient, with both S. Nam era and D. McGregor playing competent games. Ultimately, Technical revived and finished strongly. BRIGHTON V. WEST B In an earlier game the vastly superior New Brighton side outplayed West B in all phases of the game. The final score of 51-4, told its own story. Metal Walls At Mount Eden (N.Z.
