Undertaking By Britain
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 17. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) told Parliament today he referred to “the seriousness of the contradictory press reports” of the British Government’s intentions and future participation in the defence of the Pacific zone i and especially reference to the souths east Asian area.
Mr G. A. Walsh (Govt., Tairanga) had asked the Prime Minister for an assurance that Britain would not abandon her responsibilities except by agreement with the countries involved.
Although there were contradictory reports of the debate in the House of Commons, there could be no doubt of the British Government’s intentions, said Mr Holyoake. These were made perfectly clear in the British defence review last February, and the policy laid down then had been confirmed by subsequent statements by Mr Wilson. In brief, the British Government proposed to make some reductions in its forces in South-east Asia as soon as
conditions permitted, but she would continue to maintain “a significant military presence” in this area, said Mr Holyoake.
