“The Press” In 1866
June 15 “PRESS” CHESS.—The “Press” will be glad to play a game of chess with any other newspaper in the colony, the moves on both sides to be printed in the papers playing as they occur, and each paper being allowed to take any advice it wishes to obtain as to the moves. Any newspaper accepting this challenge is at liberty to take the first move playing with the white, on condition of playing a return match giving the move to the “Press.” NELSON IMPORTS.—A cargo of 77 i head of prime cattle was landed this week,
ex the schooner Eclipse, from Port Curtis, in Queensland. They were in excellent condition and perfectly healthy, and not a single head had been lost in the passage of 2000 miles. The schooner Deesse, from Mauritius, arrived at Nelson last week with 150 tons of sugar, consigned to Messrs N. Edwards & Co. We have had three cargoes of coal from New South Wales, and a cargo of coal from West Wanganui, in this province; the latter much sought after, of excellent quality, and well worth the price, 36s to 40s a ton, at which the whole has been disposed of.
