Men’s Hostel Plan
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND, June 3
Four Auckland churches are combining in a plan to build a hostel for men in the Freeman’s Bay district. Representatives of the Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches called on the Mayor of Auckland, Dr. R. G. McElroy, to discuss the plan.
Church welfare workers are concerned that in the redevelopment of the inner city no provision is being made to house many elderly men who are relying on social welfare assistance.
Many of these men, they say, would not be able to afford the rents for the more superior type of accommodation envisaged in the new development. The hostel plan is an attempt to provide suitable accommodation at reasonable rents.
A solicitor, acting for the churches, said details of the plan would not be available until negotiations were completed.
