NEW TRIALS ORDERED
Sydney Libel Actions
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, June 2. A new trial on actions for libel between a Labour member of the Federal House of Representatives, Mr Tom Uren, and two Sydney newspaper publishers were ordered today by the High Court.
The Supreme Court last year ruled that damages of $26,000 awarded to Mr Uren against one company were excessive and ordered a new trial restricted to damages only.
Mr Uren appealed but, by a three-two majority, the High Court upheld the Supreme Court’s decision. In a second action today, the High Court by a fourone decision upheld an appeal by Australian Consolidated Press for a new trial on all issues in the libel action brought by Mr Uren against the company.
