RESPONSE TO AMNESTY
2752 Weapons Surrendered

WELLINGTON, June 3.
The response to the police firearms amnesty in April and May was the best ever. A total of 2752 weapons was handed in, compared with 1750 in the 1958-59 amnesty, the previous best. Weapons taken out of circulation this time include 1916 rifles, 301 semi-automatic pistols, 481 revolvers and 25 machine-guns. Wellington and Christchurch police districts topped the list with 349 weapons surrendered. Nelson had 193, Tirnaru 160, and Greymouth 40. Auckland and Hamilton both produced six machineguns. Napier produced three, Palmerston North and Christchurch two, and New Plymouth, Wanganui, Wellington, Nelson, Invercargill and Rotorua one each.
