CHCH. BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS

After a discussion in committee, the Christchurch Boys’ High School board of governors released a press statement on its admission policy at its monthly meeting on Thursday.

The statement said that the school had enjoyed a traditional commission to prepare students for university study and it had been the continued policy of the board to seek enrolment from pupils prepared to take advantage of this standard. As in the past, applications for admission would be accepted from metropolitan Christchurch in addition to those already accepted for the hostel.

A motion was passed that the board reaffirm its policy to admit boys of sufficiently high academic standard to enable them to benefit from the courses available. In addition, consideration would be given, as far as possible, to sons of old- boys, brothers of boys at school, and boys who live close to the school. On the motion of Mr K. A. Gough, the board deferred until its next meeting a discussion on the proposed revision of the school certificate examination. Mr Gough said it was the board’s duty to examine the proposals and see how they affected the school.

The headmaster (Mr C. F. S. Caldwell), said he thought the board should discuss the matter, “although it would appear we will have to go along with it anyway.” He outlined some of the problems there might be in

implementing the new procedure.

The regional superintendent of the Education Department (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton), and an architect would meet the works committee at the school on the afternoon of June 14 to discuss plans for future developments, Mr Caldwell said.

The board agreed that a technical assistant should be advertised for to work a minimum of 30 hours a week—ls hours with Christchurch Boys’ High School and 15 hours with Riccarton High School.

Mr Caldwell said the school was allowed ancillary staff to work for 25 hours a week. He was not sure what would be done with the remaining 10 hours at this stage.
