ELIZABETH PARK
Development Plans Plans have been completed for the all-weather athletic track at Queen Elizabeth II Park, and the City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) told the City Council last evening that the estimated cost of the work was £40,000. It would be possible to call tenders within the next 10 days, the parks and recreation committee said, and the council agreed that tenders be called immediately so that the work could begin. The committee said provision had been made for an embankment for wind protection and spectator accommodation, an extensive sub-sur-face drainage system to dispose of stormwater, and for fences and equipment necessary for normal events. Reporting on the development of the par-three golf course, the committee said there had been steady progress. Five greens had been sown and another five prepared. On completion of the ereens w’ork would begin on the preparation of tees and ♦he cultivation and sowing of fairways. This would then nrovide 10 holes that could be ready for play in the late autumn of next year. Subiect to finance being available, it was intended to develop another five greens, with the hope that the remaining three could be sown in the spring or at least the autumn of next year.
The sports field development programme was being continued, with approximately 15 acres nearing completion, and it was expected that this area would be sown within the next month.
