Street Unlit
Street lamps in Papanui road between the St. Albans and Papanui shopping centres remained unlit for about three-quarters of an hour after others throughout the city were switched on yesterday evening. One of the street-lighting circuits had failed to operate when the automatic signal was sent out at dusk, said the Municipal Electricity Department’s chief engineer (Mr W. D. Johnstone). “There are hundreds of these circuits, and occasionally something goes wrong with one.” A member of the M.E.D. staff went to the Grants road sub-station about 6.30 p.m. and switched on the circuit by hand.
