MOTORWAY IN PARK
Landscaping Proposal
Mr E. Taylor, formerly the City Council’s landscape architect, was re-engaged on a temporary basis by the council last evening to work on the design of the motorway across North Hagley Park. The parks and recreation committee said that if the route for the motorway could be established with reasonable accuracy now, planting could be undertaken so that reasonable growth would be achieved before construction work began in five to 10 years’ time.
The city development committee had suggested that the making of a model should be included in the landscaping brief and that Mr Taylor be seriously considered for appointment Labour Party councillors would vote against the recommendation as they were diametrically opposed to any motorway across the park, Cr. N. G. Pickering said. They were not voting against Mr Taylor, nor against the suggestion for a model. They had pressed for that and would press for models of other motorways.
