CITY COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF

City Council representatives on the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority were instructed last evening to submit a written report to the council every three months.

Cr. R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., who proposed the reports, said the authority had achieved great importance now that the council had approved the master transport plan. Councillors should know every development.

Art Gallery.—The Canterbury Society of Arts was supported in a fresh approach to the Building Programmer for permission to build a new art gallery at 66 Gloucester street.

Mount Pleasant School.— The council agreed to advise the Lands and Survey and Education Departments that it was interested in acquiring the site of the old Mount Pleasant School.

Signal Experiment—The council will co-operate with the Transport Department in experiments on traffic signal control, particularly extended use of control by arrows. The psychology department of the University of Canterbury will also assist in the experiments. Sumner Pier.—Removal of the old piles near the Cave Rock and repair and preservation of the remaining section of the Sumner pier were approved.

Motor-cycle Parks.—Provision was made for parking areas for motor-cycles and power-cycles in four areas of the city. Roller Skating.—The council agred that a site should be made available at Kerrs reach for a stadium for the Canterbury’ Roller Skating Association.

Surf Riders.—The NorthWai Board Riders’ Club was granted permission to build a small hut in the sandhills half-way between the North Beach ' and Waimairi Surf Life-saving Clubs’ buildings. The club offered to assist on the unpatrolled beach, and said that the area would help to keep board riders away from crowds of bathers. Illegal Dumping.—Where

rubbish or drugs of a lethal nature had been dumped illegally prosecution should follow, the by-laws committee said, commenting on reports of rubbish dumping. Rate Day.—The council fixed March 1 as the last day for payment of rates for next year and future years on which the date is a week day. It had been asked to agree to February 22, so there would be uniformity among local bodies.
