TUNNEL BUSY
Thousands of people travelled through the road tunnel during the weekend to welcome the Queen Mother and to see the Royal yacht Britannia. A total of 16,959 vehicles went through—--7081 on Saturday and 9878 on Sunday. Sunday's figure was the highest since the Sunday after the opening of the tunnel on February 27, 1964, when 10,352 vehicles used it On the opening day itself, 10,157 vehicles went through free of charge between 6 p.m. and midnight In spite of the heavy traffic, there were no accidents during the
week-end, said the genera) manager of the Road Tunnel Authority (Mr L. H. Wilson). “There were one or two breakdowns, but they did not create any serious disruption. “The motorists were very well behaved,” he said. "There was no difficulty in handling the larger number of vehicles, except that restricted parking space at Lyttelton meant that the flow from the tunnel to Lyttelton at times was slower than normal.” Extra staff prevented traffic from entering the tunnel road when the Royal entourage was using the route.
