Minor Fires

Fire swept over an extensive area of grass and slightly damaged a plantation of young pine trees on Clifton Hill an Saturday about 10.3 a.m. Two machines from Woolston and one from Sumner answered the call. The plantation is owned by Mr Carl Berger and the grass area by Mr John Compton. Fire slightly damaged the exterior wall of a home at 21 Denman street about 10.35 a.m. on Saturday. The property was occupied by Mr Leo McLeod. One machine from headquarters answered the call.

A car belonging to Mr A. Truscott, of 8 Madder place, was slightly damaged when it caught fire at the intersection of Stanmore road and Avonside drive about 12.35 p.m. on Saturday. One machine from headquarters answered the call. One machine from Woolston answered a call at 6.35 p.m. on Saturday to a fire in a rubbish tin at the South Brighton Yacht Club in Bridge street. The fire did no damage. A call to a Are in a bucket at the Para Rubber Company, Ltd., on the corner of Manchester and Cashel streets, about 1.27 a.m. on Sunday, was answered by three machines from headquarters. A garage at 5 Bowenvale avenue was severely damaged and the car inside completely destroyed by a fire which broke out about 8.26 a.m. on Sunday. The garage and the car, a 1948 Standard, belonged to Mr Samuel Ward. One machine from Sydenham and another from headquarters answered the call. A scrub fire on the New Brighton foreshore, near Rockinghorse road, about 5.7 p.m. on Sunday, did no damage to property. Two machines from New Brighton attended.

Cyclist Hurt.—A cyclist, Mr M. D. Way, of 10 Warblington street, suffered head injuries when he fell from his bicycle after it struck the kerb on the New Brighton bridge about 7.15 p.m. yesterday. He was admitted to the Christchurch hospital, where his condition last evening was reported as satisfactory.
