U.S.A.F. Meets First MiG2ls
(N.Z. Pres* Association — Copyright) SAIGON, April 25. The first clash between United States supersonic jet fighters and new high-performance MiG2ls raised the prospect today of an intensified air war over Vietnam and a stronger challenge to American air supremacy, says the Associated Press.
A flight of American Phantoms fought with two Sovietbuilt MiG2ts yesterday for the first time in the war. After an exchange of fire, the engagement was broken off with neither sine scoring. But United States jets downed two MiG2ls in another encounter. All told, American fighters had three encounters with enemy aircraft yesterday the first aerial battles since July 10. No American planes were brought down, although two Air Force FlO5 Thunderchiefs were lost in the area,
apparently from ground fire, an Air Force spokesman said Both pilots were listed as missing. The North Vietnamese news agency reported that three United States aircraft were shot down by North Vietnam's air force and ground forces.
