PREVENTION OF CRIME
Section To Be Extended (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 25. The crime prevention section is likely to be enlarged to extend operations to more centres. The acting head of the C. 1.8., Detective-Superinten-dent R. J. Walton, said today: “We’re satisfied the section’s work is bearing results." For a year the section has been established in Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch. Dunedin and Hamilton. Mr Walton stressed the lifficn'ty of assessing results of crime prevention work, but he said the public’s increased alertness to the action required of them in preventing crime was a gauge. During the year more than 500 premises had been given security checks by crime prevention officers at the request of property owners, Mr Walton said. This survey service was free, and it was hoped even more people would take advantage of it in future. “Our men know how criminals operate and their knowledge often makes it possible for them to pick up security weaknesses which escape the property owner,” he said.
Mr R. W. S. Cavanagh has been appointed deputy-con-troller of the Wildlife Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. He has been with the department for 16 years and previously was senior game management officer.
