WELLINGTON, April 22.
Third Fire Officer D. Varley rescued a burning coat from a fire which gutted two floors of Wardell’s Building in Willis street, Wellington. He handed it to the manager of the first floor coffee bar, Mr F. Zylstra who found two canvas bags containing the day’s takings in the i pocket.
“The money was not even scorched,” said Mr Zylstra today.
Searching in the ruins of the coffee bar, Mr Zylstra found a charred envelope containing a number of slightly charred notes.
I They were wages belonging . to a member of his staff who I had been sick, he said.
