Control Of I.D.D. May Change
There are increasing reports that the Canterbuiy University Industrial Development Department will soon pass into the control of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research or some other agency.
Questioned, the Vice-Chan-cellor of the university (Dr. I L. Pownall) declined to give a direct answer. The university took full control of the department about three years ago after had been jointly administered by the D.S.I.R. and the university, he said. •The university will con-
tinue to operate the department so iong as it is certain t at in so doing it is serving best the interests of manufacturers." said Dr. Pownall. “If a case for some other form of control were submit-
ted. 1 am sure the University Council would listen sympathetically.
I am quite confident that.
No Sound Shell A proposal that a sound shell should be built in Jellie Park was rejected by Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening, on the grounds that there were doubts that the site would be suitable in view of the traffic and noise factors in a residential area, and also that it would be used enough to justify the considerable expense. The proposal was made by a deputation of Bryndwr ministers of religion at a works and reserves committee meeting. They suggested it could be used by church groups for religious plays, and also by bands, drama groups, “pop” singers, orchestras, “teachins.” and ballet companies.
irrespective of who is in control, the University Council would like the industrial development department ultimately to be housed on or immediately contiguous to the Ham campus in keeping with the decision that nonuniversity research institutions of academic worth should be encouraged round Ham,” said Dr. Pownall.
