Queen In Cameo On New Stamps

A new cameo-style portrait of the Queen is to appear on a set of four pictorial stamps featuring British countryside scenes, to be issued on May 2, says the London correspondent of “The Press.”

The set will be the first British special stamps not linked to some current event or important anniversary. The General Post Office says that this departure from the familiar Dorothy Wilding portrait of the Queen will not necessarily be used for the new permanent issue stamps or for future special issues. The Wilding portrait has

been used on every British stamp during the Queen’s reign, except a single value (Is 3d) of the Coronation issue.

The Queen consented to the use of a profile derived from the head used on British coins. In all four cases the profile portrait is on a blue

panel on the right of the stamps, which were designed by Leonard Rosoman. The 4d denomination depicts a Sussex county scene and will be printed in black, blue and green. The 6d stamp is of a sea and country landscape in Antrim, Northern Ireland, and will also be in black, blue and green. A view of Harlech Castle, Wales, perched on its rock, is on the Is 3d stamp, in black, blue and yellow. The Is 6d stamp shows an autumn landscape in the Cairngorms, Scotland, and will be in black, blue and orange.
