Fish Research By University
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 22. A three-year contract for research on fish has been signed between the Fishing Industry Board and the food technology department
of Massey University. The board will pay £2OOO a year for the next three years, which will be subsidised £ for £ by the D.S.I.R. The general manager of the board, Mr J. S. Campbell, said the contract would enable a worth-while project to be started on the utilisation of fish products. Massey University would be able to help the industry in the correct packaging and processing needed for canning, freezing and smoking of fish.
“Massey will be looking for a top-grade scientist and the subsidy may enable them to bring an experienced man from overseas,” he said. The immediate programme
to be undertaken by the university would be research into the problem of treating the flesh of trevally and red cod. Both were plentiful in New Zealand, but were less popular than other fish.
