Photographers Go To Pyramid Valley

Travelling in a convoy of 87 private cars, about 240 delegates to the 15th annual convention of the Photographic Society of New Zealand went on a trip to Pyramid Valley, in the HawardenWaikari area, on Thursday. Two Christchurch City Council traffic department officers on motor-cycles escorted the convoy as far as the city limits, and a Transport Department officer saw it safely through a compulsory stop at the Main North road. During the trip the delegates made frequent stops to take photographs. Conditions were almost perfect, though some would have liked a little more cloud to add “atmosphere” to landscape studies. A highlight of the day was

i a visit to “Heathstock,” Mr IL. K. Lattgesen’s property between Mason's Flat and Pyramid Valley, where closeup shots were taken of a 3500-guinea stud Hereford bull. In the Weka Pass area, limestone outcrops, including the well-known “Frog,” proved popular subjects, while at Pyramid Valley itself the main attractions were ploughing patterns, autumn colour in the poplars, and the contours of hills and valleys in the late afternoon light. A collection of about 200 coloured slides was screened for the delegates in the evening. These were compiled with a taped commentary, by the Photographic Society of America, from slides sent by photographic groups throughout the world.
