Golf Balls Shortage May Get Worse
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON.
Alarmed at the serious shortage of golf balls, and other golf components, the New Zealand Golf Council decided yesterday to approach the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton).
This action followed a letter from the AuckGolf Association referring to a “grave shortage” of golf balls in Auckland. The letter said that several I clubs had none for sale, and, were having the greatest difficulty in obtaining even nominal supplies. It was anticipated the situation would get worse. Mr J. A. Scouler said that during the last three years
the number of golfers in New Zealand had increased more than 20 per cent, but import licences had remained the same. Mr Hollis said that in addiction to the increase in adult I golfers, there were some 2000 ' more junior players, and a big increase in the popularity of summer golf. Mr J. N. Bissett said it was the country clubs, who had not made adequate arrangements with wholesalers and tended to buy equipment “willy nilly,” who were the worst hit.
