(Neto Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON. A warning that the physical condition of the candidates will be an important factor in the selection of the New Zealand golf team for |he Eisenhower Trophy amateur championship in Mexico next October, Sv as issued today by the convener of the selection panel, Mr V. G. Hollis.
“The physical aspect is SO important in selecting this year s team that there are no golfers who could be classed as favourites for selection,” said m n ir Mr riollis.
“There are a few in players in the 18-25 s; age group who will j come into considera- | tion for the team. a ' mainly because of jtt their physical condi- joi tion.” I o' Mr Hollis said that two to' B three months’ training would i be necessary and candidates N would have to remove all sur- c ' plus weight before the team 01 was picked. n: “I’m not a great believer in s * gymnasium work—l think one t« day a week is sufficient—but a lot of road work will have tl to be done by the prospective ti
members of the team,” he said. Three Trials Named Mr Hollis and his co-selec-:ors, Messrs J. A. Scouler ind J. G. Slade, have named hree tournaments as being mes that will have bearing )n team selection. They are the Freyberg Rose 3owl at the Grange, Auckand, from May 12 to 14, the Vorth Island 72-hole stroke ihampionship at Te Awamutu >n August 20 and 21 and the lational amateur champion;hip at Russley, from Sepember 6-10. “The qualifying rounds of his latter event will be paricularly important, as the
Eisenhower Trophy is a other Event. Watched in addition, Mr Hollis said, the selectors would take carefu DOte of any s eneral P er ' formances in provincial events by the leading candidates for selection. He told yesterday’s meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council: “Perhaps five or six days will be sufficient to acclimatise the team in Mexico City.”
“The team must be trained ■before it leaves and we should get them to Mexico as soon as possible after the Sloan Morpeth Trophy match with Australia at Auckland,” he said.
Playing New Rules Two new rules, practised by the United States Golf Association in an effort to speed up play, will be in force in the Eisenhower Trophy in Mexico.
Mexico will introduce the continuous putting rule where the first to putt, putts out and does not wait for the next furthest away to putt, and the rule which allows cleaning of the ball before the first putt only.
Bigger Allowances
Representations will be made to the Reserve Bank regarding allowances for the New Zealand team. The World Amateur Golf Council had recommended a daily budget of 22 dollars per player. Mr Hollis said: “That is £2 10s above the Reserve Bank allowance.
“I sincerely hope that the manager doesn’t have to get on like the manager of the team which went to Rome for the last championship—we aren’t the poor relations of the golf world.”
The dates for the Sloan Morpeth Trophy will probably be October 14 and 15 and the venue has yet to be named, but approaches will be made to the Auckland Golf Club to play the match at Middlemore. In the event of Middlemore being unavailable an approach will be made to Titirangi.
