Souvenir Coin Sets
Sir, —I should be pleased if 5 you would check the accuracy ’ of the New Zealand Press As- ’ sociation message printed this morning, saying that 200,000 ' sets in all had been sold, and 1 that 220,000 orders throughout the world had been received. It was earlier advised that the total minting would ; be 200,000 sets, and this limit J is important if the sets are , to be of value to collectors, ; who pay a premium with this , understanding. I believe i i actually more than 100,000 . sets are still unsold. I won- . der if the limit of three sets . a person also applies to over- i i seas buyers. The Churchill i commemorative crown was . sold through our banks with ' i a limit of one to each appli- : cant, and the coins were in poor condition on arrival. Yet 1 overseas dealers can offer i them in mint condition, any 1 quantity, at 14s each. In the ' past, proof sets and limited 1 mintings have gone to a privi- 1 leged few.—Yours, etc., NUMISMA. April 15, 1966. [The Secretary to the Treasury (Mr D. W. Barker) replies: “A total of 200,000 souvenir coin sets are being minted, all bearing the date, ; 1965. , The figures for the in- , dividual grades are as fol- 1 lows: Polished standard speci- , men sets, 25,000: selected run - sets, 75,000; ordinary run ; sets, 100,000. To date the com- j plete minting of the polished i standard specimen sets has ] been sold, while 35,000 ; selected and 22.000 ordinary < run sets have also been sold, i All sales, both internally and < overseas, have been on the 2 basis of a maximum of three 1 sets a person.”] c
