Sir, —“Ratepayer” wrote that “no reasonable person would sit back and allow his neighbour’s property to be damaged by tree roots,” and quoted a Privy Council case where the owner of such a tree had to pay £4OO with costs. He removed a similar tree, glad to be co-operative and relieved to see the sun again and have clean roof gutters after years of being browbeaten by friends who said, “Don’t destroy it; it took years to grow.” The objectors returned to their invariably sunny sections and we crept back into the gloom. Many of these huge trees were planted far from the original houses, and subdivision makes them undesirable and absurd. Their removal does not mean that the owners are not tree-lovers.— Yours, etc.,
